M2 - Math Facilitator Program
A Math Facilitator is a teacher of mathematics who is committed to continuous growth of his/her instructional repertoire. A Math Facilitator is willing to experiment with new instructional practices, implement the use of manipulative materials, explore technology integration, and adopts current best practices in mathematics education. In addition, a Math Facilitator is willing to share, discuss and model these new ideas with his/her colleagues.
MATH FACILITATOR PD MODEL
The Math Facilitators will be expected to provide professional development for colleagues using the process described below. This process will be implemented twice during each school year.
STEP 1 – Each Math Facilitator will select a topic for a professional development module to share with colleagues. This module may include, but is not limited to:
- Implementing technology into the teaching of mathematics
- Modeling a best-practice in mathematics instruction
- Use of data analysis to improve instruction
- Using math manipulatives effectively
- Employing problem based learning in the classroom
- Other appropriate topics
STEP 2 – Each Math Facilitator will spend one school day released from his/her classroom to prepare this PD module. The Math Facilitators may work in small groups, or may be assisted by the district TOSA for math or an outside consultant.
STEP 3 – Each Math Facilitator will spend another school day implementing this PD module with two (2) of his/her peers (protégées). A substitute teacher will be provided for the Math Facilitator and for the protégées.
