CONNOR CHARACTER CONNECTION

Connor Middle School is pleased to announce the third year of the Character Education program called The Connor Character Connection. (C3)  In this program, a positive character trait will be announced each month, and the faculty and staff are encouraged to nominate students that they feel demonstrate the qualities of that month’s trait.  As students are nominated, a paragraph is written about them that outlines how they specifically display the character trait of the month.  The nominated students’ pictures are then displayed in the front foyer area of Connor Middle School.

This character initiative was implemented by the Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports Committee (PBIS) at Connor Middle School as a supplement to the district goals of providing opportunities for Character Education.  The committee explored the Six Pillars of Character and the values associated with possessing positive character traits.  Studies suggest that providing students with opportunities to display positive characteristics and rewarding students for desired behaviors establishes an environment of character growth.  It is the goal of the Character Connection program to establish an environment in which virtues such as honesty, kindness, sportsmanship, dependability, cheerfulness and cooperation are continually practiced and rewarded.  According to the Center for Advancement of Ethics and Character, “Character education should not be viewed merely as an educational trend or the school’s latest fad; it is a fundamental dimension of good teaching, an abiding respect for the intellect and spirit of the individual.
