A Protoype Skimboard!

Our students here at Veronica E. Connor Middle School and Grand Island Senior High have begun a Naval Architecture and Boat Building Program.  This after school program is designed to give students the opportunity to learn and develop life skills through the medium of boat construction.  Some of the topics we cover include:

·        Blueprint reading

·        Lofting (measurements)

·        Layout/ template production

·        Material preparation

·        Scarfing

·        Epoxy/ fiberglass construction techniques

·        Stitch and glue construction methods

·        Safe use of hand and power tools

·        Finish preparations (sanding/ fairing)

·        Finish applications (paint/ varnish)

·        Vessel outfitting for use (deck rigging, hatches, seats, foot pedals)

·        Conservation of materials and resources

This program is a comprehensive and challenging endeavor.  Students are expected to perform high quality work while participating in a team environment.
